Hello and welcome! Out of Kin is an online support group for people navigating strained, difficult, or estranged family relationships.

We meet online on Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 PM (IST).

We support each other through diverse experiences and challenges related to difficult or dysfunctional family relationships. We aim to create a space built on respect, confidentiality, and mutual support.

Participation is voluntary. You don't have to share anything you’re not comfortable sharing.

The group is facilitated by Jade (they/them), an expressive arts practitioner, facilitator, and peer counsellor. This is a peer support group, not a professional counselling group, and anything shared here is not a replacement for therapy.

If you’re in a crisis or need immediate support, this group is not the right place for you. Please contact a mental health professional or crisis service.

The group centers women and non-binary people. If you’re neither, you’re still welcome if you respect what this space is for.

This is a queer and neurodiversity-affirmative space.

Session fee: ₹600 per person, per session

Group Agreement & Rules for Participation

By participating in Out of Kin, you agree to the following:

What a session looks like

This is a space to focus on ourselves, especially because we don’t always get to take up space at home.

We’ll talk about what’s hard, while also making space for things that bring us joy, hope, and a sense of aliveness. There’s no pressure to be positive or grateful. We’ll make space for what we need, what we feel, and who we are outside of our family relationships.

Sessions include art-based reflection and grounding activities. Share when you feel ready, or simply listen. You can keep your camera off, do something while we talk, participate through chat, or just be present.

This is a peer support group, not a professional counselling group, and anything shared here is not a replacement for therapy.

1. Settle in

We’ll start with a short check-in activity to help you arrive and settle into the space.

2. Share & listen

Those who wish to share will take turns sharing what’s on their mind. We’ll check what kind of response they’d like, if any. We’ll take up to two verbal responses from others, with additional responses through the chat.

You’re always free to pass, listen, or stay quietly present. For everyone’s safety, please introduce yourself with your name and location when you join.

3. Take breaks

We’ll take short breaks during the session. You’re also welcome to move around or take a break whenever you need. You may leave the session early if needed.

4. Closing reflections

We’ll end with a simple art-based grounding and reflection activity to help you transition out of the session.

Participation Rules

1. Voluntary Participation

Participation is completely voluntary. You never have to speak, share personal details, or discuss anything you’re not comfortable with. At the same time, you’re welcome to take up space, talk about yourself, and share your thoughts and feelings with the group.

2. Non-judgmental Listening

You can share your thoughts and feelings without being judged. We’re not here to judge your choices, beliefs, struggles, emotions, experiences, responses, or mistakes.

We listen to understand and support, not to fix, criticize or judge.

3. Respect for Others

Treat everyone with respect. Racism, sexism, casteism, classism, religious discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other forms of discrimination are not welcome.

Give others space to speak and be heard. Avoid interrupting or talking over someone.

Please don’t give unsolicited advice. Offer it only when someone asks for it.

4. Triggering Topics

If you’re sharing something that may be triggering for others, please give a trigger or content warning first. If you know that specific details may be disturbing or triggering, please consider whether they need to be shared. You can name the topic without going into vivid or graphic details.

We’ll also share relevant warnings in the chat as the session continues.

If you’d rather not hear a particular topic, you can mute the call until it has passed. The facilitator will let you know when it’s okay to return.

5. Confidentiality

What’s shared in the group stays in the group. Don’t share or repeat someone’s identity or personal experiences outside the session without their explicit consent.

Do not try to contact/reach out the people you meet in the support space without their consent.

Limits to Confidentiality

We want to keep what’s shared in the group private. There are a few situations where a facilitator may need to break confidentiality to help keep someone safe:

  • If they believe someone may hurt themselves.

  • If they believe someone may hurt another person.

  • If they become aware that someone is being abused.

  • If they believe someone may hurt themselves.

  • If they believe someone may hurt another person.

  • If they become aware that someone is being abused.

In these situations, the facilitator may contact someone who can help. They will only share what is necessary. Only the facilitator may break confidentiality in these circumstances.

Risks and Benefits

Regular participation may help you find connection, support, strength, or useful resources through the group.

If you feel uncomfortable, triggered, or overwhelmed during or after a session, please let the facilitator know. They can support you where possible or help connect you with appropriate mental health support if needed.
